What are Anti-Graffiti Coatings?

Anti-Graffiti Coatings are specially manufactured Paints, Coatings, Glazes or Varnishes that prevent graffiti vandalism, in all its forms, from successfully adhering to a substrate.

Anti-Graffiti Coatings must be able to resist Spray Paint and Permanent Marker Pen graffiti as these are the most common choices of the graffiti vandal and they should facilitate the 100% removal of said graffiti without shadows, stains and ghosting being left behind and without the call for heavy chemical graffiti removers which may damage the environment.

Anti-Graffiti Coatings come in three main varieties:

Sacrificial Anti-Graffiti Coatings:

Sacrificial anti-graffiti coatings require reapplication after graffiti removal takes place. Usually, polymer or wax based these single use matt finishes are invisible once applied and as such lend themselves perfectly to heritage and national trust type buildings and structures. Easily applied by brush, roller or using spray equipment and best cleaned with a hot water pressure wash, sacrificial systems can be slightly more labour intensive and as such aren’t suitable for areas frequently attacked by graffiti vandals.

Permanent Anti-Graffiti Paints:

Permanent anti-graffiti paints should offer around 10 years of graffiti protection. Available in both coloured and clear finishes (Matt and Gloss) these graffiti resistant paints often contain silicone and efficiently repel any graffiti media, holding it away from the substrate and facilitating simple, water washable graffiti protection. Depending on the manufacturer you should expect to complete between 10 and 50 cleaning operations before your anti-graffiti paint system requires reapplication. This makes anti-graffiti paints ideal for long term graffiti protection and suitable for brick, stone, painted surface and concrete protection.

True Permanent Anti-Graffiti Coatings:

To be classified as a true permanent anti-graffiti coating the anti-graffiti finish should last for over 20 years and offer an almost unlimited amount of cleans, at least 1 per week for the life of the coating. Usually, polysiloxane based and clear, True Permanent anti-graffiti coatings form a low surface energy “shield” over protected substrates and facilitate fast and repeated graffiti removal using mild and safe graffiti removal agents. True Permanent Anti-Graffiti Coatings lend themselves best to the protection of street furniture, painted murals, utility cabinets and highway and railway bridges, structures, subways and trains.
